“Azerbaijan’s membership to the EAEU would mean respecting the clause of the treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union stipulating that every member state, even an observer shall refrain from any step jeopardizing member states,” the deputy minister of foreign affairs Shavarsh Kocharyan told reporters after the meeting of government. Note that a few days ago the Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov visiting Baku stated that Russia would welcome Azerbaijan to the EAEU. Shavarsh Kocharyan said if Azerbaijan wants to get closer to the EAEU in one way or another, it should not take steps that will be against Armenia. “Speaking of economy, it is enough to recall that it blocks Armenia. Obviously, these are actions aimed at the interests of member states. We would welcome membership to the EAEU or becoming an observer if Azerbaijan carried out the obligations that are defined,” he said. Kocharyan added that this means the following: Azerbaijan must end the blockade, refrain from hostile actions against Armenia and end armenophobia.
