The spokesperson of the Government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya) Jordi Turull has announced that 90% of voters voted for independence from Spain. 2.3 million people of 5.3 million eligible voters voted.

The head of the government Carles Puigdemont has called the referendum results “impressive” on Twitter.

Puigdemont says the population of the sovereignty have earned their right to sovereignty. “Today is a day of hope. The citizens of Catalonia won their right to be an independent country which will be government as a republic,” he said in his TV message.

The head of Catalonia called on the EU not to ignore the breaches of human rights by the Spanish police and express readiness for a dialogue with Madrid.

The founder of Wikileaks Julian Assange twitted that during the referendum in Catalonia the Spanish law enforcement bodies have seized about 700,000 marked ballots.

For its part, Madrid says the referendum is not valid.
