Serzh Sargsyan on Rule of Law

Today, Serzh Sargsyan met with the president of the European Council Herman van Rompuy. At the end of the meeting, the officials held a joint press conference.

Serzh Sargsyan particularly said that such a high-level visit promotes further deepening and expansion of our relations. We had a sincere and useful discussion on bilateral and regional issues with Mr. van Rompuy. We have complete agreement on all the issues, said Serzh Sargsyan.

Armenia is committed to reforms aimed at further democratization of our country, the rule of law, improvement of the social and economic situation, public administration reforms. For these processes, we see the European Union as a supporter, he said.

Serzh Sargsyan reported that he discussed with the president of the European Council the settlement of the NKR issue reiterating the fact that the conflict must be solved within the Minsk Group based on the UN Charter and Helsinki Final Act. He welcomed the EU's willingness to implement confidence building measures and to achieve lasting peace in the region.

They dwelt on the recent parliamentary elections in Armenia. Serzh Sargsyan said the assessments of the Armenian officials and European partners are similar on the following: the parliamentary election was the best one in the history of independent Armenia but there is much more to do to improve the electoral process. I reiterated my commitment to further progress in organization of the presidential election in 2013, said Serzh Sargsyan.

He dwelt on the EU-Armenia negotiations underlining that the talks on the Association Agreement will soon be over, as well as DCFTA.

He thanked their European partners for their willingness to support reforms in Armenia.
