During the session of the National Assembly on the issue of presidential election the issue of citizenship of the presidential candidate Armen Sarkissian caused a debate.
The head of Yelq parliamentary group Nikol Pashinyan announced that there is not a single document proving that Armen Sarkissian is eligible for running for president.
“Is there an official document certifying when he renounced citizenship of the UK?” Member of Parliament Pashinyan asked. He asked to present the document immediately.
The secretariat of the National Assembly provided documents to the members of parliament on the request of the head of the Republican parliamentary group Vahram Baghdasaryan.
The members of parliament of Yelq parliamentary group Ararat Mirzoyan and Artak Zeynalyan insisted that the presidential candidate Armen Sargsyan must be a citizen of Armenia and only for Armenia for six years running. A document is needed which will prove that he is not a UK citizen.
Vahram Baghdasaryan said the documents required by the rules of procedure of the National Assembly have been checked several times. If there is something that is not covered by the Rules of Procedure, the members of parliament can make inquiries with the relevant agencies.
The deputy speaker of parliament Arpine Hovhannisyan stated that the documents provided by the relevant agency prove that Armen Sarkissian was a citizen of Armenia in the past six years and is a permanent resident of Armenia.
He said that the relevant agency has provided that document, and if they want to find out the grounds on which the relevant agency provided the document, the addressee is not the secretariat of the National Assembly.
