New Incidents in Harsnakar

Human Rights Defender of Armenia Karen Andreasyan made a statement which particularly runs that on July 8 fresh incidents were reported in Harsnakar restaurant. The hot line of the Ombudsman’s Office received calls reporting that human rights activist Arman Veziryan underwent violence. The Ombudsman says the rapid reaction group immediately left for the scene.

According to the Human Rights Defender, Vahe Avetyan’s tragic death makes people protest for the prevention of future similar cases as well and everyone hopes that not only everyone guilty for Vahe Avetyan’s death will be punished but also violence and criminal practices will be uprooted by the the efforts of the society and authorities.

The Ombudsman calls on the Police to support promotion of the Constitutional rights of citizens to express their protest and opinions. The police is supposed to ensure the security of not only demonstrators but also private property from any illegal action. In this context, the refusal to let the protesters get closer to Harsnakar restaurant had to be explained to the citizens proposing them another place to hold their action.

The Ombudsman once again condemns violence, especially against human rights activists, asking the Police to make sure the investigation of violence against Arman Veziryan will be objective and public.

As to the fact that the protesters chant insulting slogans, the only way is to appeal to the court and demand compensation.

The Human Rights Defender of Armenia calls on the sides to obey the law. Holding out his support to the civil activists and citizens, he urges to stay far from those local and international organizations and individuals who try to use fair civil indignation for political aims.
