Why Is Shahnazaryan Keeping a Distance?

The Irates De Facto reported tension between Levon Ter-Petrosyan and David Shahnazaryan, and Shahnazaryan keeps a distance from the Armenian National Congress.

It is not a surprise since Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s political course put David Shahnazaryan in a very difficult situation. In February 2011, David Shahnazaryan used to state that Robert Kocharyan destabilizes the situation in Armenia through the Prosperous Armenia Party to return to government but the Congress prevented him.

In that period, Congress was busy with the dialogue with the authorities and Serzh Sargsyan forced the PAP to sign a coalition memorandum.

So, David Shahnazaryan stated on behalf of the Congress that Robert Kocharyan would not be allowed to destabilize the situation in Armenia and return to government but no one from the ANC shared his opinion, so his statements came out to reflect exceptionally his personal opinions.

Moreover, when Serzh Sargsyan forced the PAP to sign the memorandum of February 17, the Congress said no word on this event in its February 18 rally, and didn’t try to destroy the monolith of the government. Moreover, the Congress and its allies criticized those who doubted that the governmental monolith fulfilled Kocharyan’s order. Then the Congress worked out the plan of the dialogue with Serzh Sargsyan.

Following the failure of the dialogue, the Congress engaged in political analyses and concluded that Kocharyan is not backing the PAP which is an Armenia-born party striving for independence.

David Shahnazaryan found himself in a very awkward situation because he had assumed responsibility for such an important statement for the Congress, while the latter suddenly shifted to a completely different type of official statements ending all hopes from Serzh Sargsyan and reliance on the PAP.

It will not be easy for the Congress to digest such a change of strategy. Together with their leader they have been telling the society controversial things so far. Meanwhile responsibility falls on the figures.

Here, besides disagreement on tactics and methodology which could also be the main cause of major disagreement in the Congress, separate people face the issue of keeping their face. Moreover, not everyone is equipped with such charm as to be perceived legend of flexible policy.
