Hovik Abrahamyan, the head of the Republican campaign headquarters, did not attend the first post-election meeting of the Republican board. His absence is interesting against the background recent developments in Ararat where he comes from where RPA was defeated by the Prosperous Armenia Party in the May 6 parliamentary elections. Press reported that some Republican officials demanded back the money they had disbursed for vote buying because the number votes they received and the amount of money disbursed did not match.
Of course, it does not matter what happened Hovik Abrahamyan’s home. But obviously, despite its absolute victory, the Republicans lost in different parts of the republic which is, first of all, the responsibility of the head of the campaign headquarters.
At the same time, Hovik Abrahamyan’s absence can hardly be understood as punishment.
Most probably, Hovik Abrahamyan himself preferred not to attend the meeting for some excuse, being sure that no “historic” decision will be made or on the contrary thinking that there would be unpleasant decisions for him.
The Republican board was expected to make decisions on the post-election developments related to the coalition, prime minister and ministerial portfolios, division of power etc.
But press reported that Hovik Abrahamyan would get the NA speaker’s position, in which case Abrahamyan should be happy but Hovik Abrahamyan who has been trying to enhance the role of the parliament since autumn 2008 understood that this role has only declined in fact, the best proof of which was sudden appointment of speaker Abrahamyan as head of the RPA campaign headquarters.
In parliaments which have a certain role this phenomenon is abnormal, and Hovik Abrahamyan has realized this. Now the NA speaker’s office is not what it was for him in 2008.
Now this is just an office of a warden which cannot satisfy Abrahamyan, especially with the multiple later of the status quo. In this multilayer situation one needs brains to cope with it, while Hovik Abrahamyan has stated once that brains is not a must in politics. But this means that Serzh Sargsyan places Hovik Abrahamyan in a bad political position which cannot be exciting for him.
