TOM DE WAAL DWELLS ON DANGER OF WAR

British expert, Thomas de Waal, engaged in the study of the NKR conflict, says on March 9 in Yerevan that the NKR issue is a problem of statehood and philosophical character. He says that both Azerbaijan and Armenia built their statehood around the Karabakh issue, he adds that the sides are to talk not about the war but common things.

“Let Azerbaijan accept that there were and there are Armenians living in Karabakh, let Armenia accept that there were Azeris living there. Shushi was an Azerbaijani city. Both sides are to accept”, says Thomas de Vaal.

He dwelt on the opinions that the status quo is needed to be preserved. “Azerbaijan is not content of the status quo. In essence, you are based on the fact that Azerbaijan will not commit any stupidity. You hope they will not start a war and the status quo will be preserved. But the problem for Azerbaijan is not only Karabakh, but also the adjacent territories where there was no Armenian population. Sooner or later, they are sure to try to get back territories. I am afraid the OSCE will not be able to stop one of the sides, if the latter decides to use bombs”, says Thomas de Waal noting that the status quo cannot be preserved for long, it is needed to be changed.

By the way, he noted that the Caucasian people have one particularity: they undervalue their role in the settlement of conflicts. De Waal noted the NKR issue is not frozen but asleep. According to him, the Cyprus issue is frozen, which is not solved but there will be no war. As to the NKR issue, nevertheless, there is some danger of a war.
